Meta Launches Threads to Compete With Twitter

Meta, previously known as Facebook, has just officially launched their new platform – Threads. Threads will now be a near-direct competitor with Twitter. This may have been extremely strategic marketing on Mark Zuckerberg’s part (Meta’s CEO), but he challenged Elon Musk (former Twitter CEO) to a fight a couple of weeks ago. This generated quite the media attention, and Elon replied that he’d do a cage fight against him. Only a few weeks later for, Meta to announce they are launching a new platform that would be a direct competitor with Twitter. Ironic? You be the judge.

If that was intentional, that is great marketing, but what does the launch of Threads mean to you and your marketing efforts? Let’s dig in and see what we can discover.

Marketing Implications with Meta’s New Platform Threads

As most people know, social media has become a massive part of branding, advertising, and reaching a new audience. Whenever a new platform drops, it can be tough to generate the hype around it and get people signed up. However, with Threads, Meta already has access to billions of people through Facebook and Instagram. They are all tied together, and people don’t like joining or going on new platforms – a potential reason why people wouldn’t download Twitter. The main difference here, you don’t need to create a whole new account; you just build off your Instagram account. It takes a whole step out of the process.

Since Meta has access to billions of people, they already have a proven process and know and understand social media platforms; this gives them a significant advantage over companies that would just be starting. Everyone is currently flocking to Threads as it’s a new platform, it’s a place to gain a new following, and it’s a place to capitalize and be an early adopter.

Being an early adopter on any platform gives you a significant advantage over the competition as you’re able to learn the platform and grow your following before anyone else. This is all great to do, but will the hype die down?

Will The Threads Hype Disappear?

One aspect that you need to consider is that when a new platform comes out, thousands, and in this case, most likely, millions of people are going to want to be that first adopter to gain traction and following. The first few weeks are probably going to be filled with a massive amount of people flooding into the platform and trying to gain new following, but is it all hype, and then people will stop caring?

It’s a new shiny object, so obviously, people are going to want to play with it at the start. If you are one of them, there’s nothing wrong with that. Go out there, grow your following, and learn the platform. However, if the platform starts to dwindle after a while because people get bored with their new toy, you want to ensure that you are bringing your audience to your other platforms. If you use Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, or whatever platforms your own, try to spread the knowledge to generate more traffic there. This is a great opportunity for you to gain traction on the platforms you have spent countless hours, days, and years building.

It’s a great time for you to start building that like, know, and trust factor that you’ll often hear. This is how you gain more loyal supporters that evangelize you and your company.

Promoting Your Other Platforms

You don’t just want to say, “Check out my podcast” or “Follow me here” You still want to be using the platform as you should be, but it’s sprinkling in little bits here and there to give your new audience a glimpse at who you are, what you do, and where else they might be able to find you.

Include it in your bio, create an introductory post, and work on providing value first, which will generate the following, then every now and then, you’ll be able to sprinkle in “Hey, I just released this helpful blog that I think could provide some value” or “I have this amazing guide that will help build your social media presence.”

I always like to say that you need to collect this information on your own hosting platform, so an email or phone number so you can always have direct contact with them and don’t need to worry about a certain platform going down or banning you.

Will There Be Censorship on Threads?

One big area that Twitter capitalized on was the censorship issue that was taking place in our world. We were being force-fed information to promote a narrative and also restricting our reach when we were going against that narrative. Meta was one of those platforms that were doing the censoring over the last few years, where creators would get banned, limited on their reach, and more, and with Meta owning Threads, I believe this will be an area to keep an eye on.

There has been a lot of information coming out about censorship in the media and social platforms, especially with the Twitter files and the fact that Elon and Twitter wanted free speech to be for everyone, not a specific side, which generated a lot of traction.

If Threads decides to censor and restrict accounts, we can just see people bouncing to Twitter because they are sick of all the censorship and being told what they can and can’t say. Whereas on Twitter, it’s close to free speech as you will get.
