The Alex Hormozi Approach to Digital Marketing

Summarize with AI

I’m assuming you know who Alex Hormozi is since you are here. If not, I’ll get into who he is in a second, but I was listening to a podcast of his and he said something that really stood out to me, “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing great.” This stood out to me because if you’re going to put the time and effort into doing something, you might as well do a great job, right? What’s the point of doing a half-assed job? And how can we apply it to digital marketing?

Now, who Alex Hormozi is if you aren’t aware, he is an entrepreneur, who has built up and sold businesses and currently owns acquisition.com where they invest in businesses and scale them. He has come on the scene over the last few years taking over with the amount of volume he is putting out with his content. Not only is his content good, it’s great. That is where this gets interesting.

The Difference Between Good and Great

Alex’s book, $100M Offers, has been a massive hit and still continues to be until this day. The reason? Because he made it great. It’s easy to make something good, but to make something great is the tough part.

At the time of this, he has currently only released the first book in his series – $100M Offers, where he spent hours upon hours making it great. He is currently working on his second book, $100M Leads, where he has said he spent a total of 3,500 hours between him and his editor (2,000 hours and 1,500 hours respectively).

The first book he has done a minimal amount of marketing for but continues to sell all around the world. Why? Because he made it great. The book is so great that it markets itself.

There are several “good” books out there, but there are only a handful of books that are “great” and those stand the test of time. They get passed down and live on for years. This is what we are striving for. We don’t want to just blend in with everyone else and copy the herd. But how are you supposed to stand out when you’re doing the same thing as everyone else or even have an impact on a longer time frame?

How Do You Stand Out Through Digital Marketing?

This is the tough part. It requires more effort, more time, more trial and error, researching what competitors are doing, and much more. You will need to be the trend setter. It will take several failures, but with those failures will come valuable lessons and teach you what doesn’t work. You’ll be able to adapt and proceed using your own data.

There are always talking points and new product innovations such as AI (artificial intelligence) with platforms such as ChatGPT, Bard, and many others, but should you be using them? Let’s dive into that.

Should You Use AI In Your Marketing?

There is a countless number of people jumping on the AI train, businesses included. They are all using it to write blogs, produce copy on your website, social media posts, emails, and much more. Sure, AI can save you some time, but will it be able to generate your exact thoughts, beliefs, and industry insights? You have been working in your industry for years and have all this knowledge built up – tell this story to your audience and showcase your industry expertise. AI can’t do this.

Sure, you can use AI to help generate ideas, get the ball rolling, or a rough outline, but an AI draft should only be the very beginning of whatever piece of content you are working with. You’ll need to put all the ingredients, toppings, and the cherry on top if you want to be great. How do you expect to stand out and be great if everyone is using the same AI tool as you are and coming up with the same topics? More often than not, this content will end up being fairly similar to everyone else’s and it’ll all blend together.

There is also the issue with web crawlers and Google flagging AI content. There are options for humans to report content that seems to be written by AI. Do you want to be flagged? I’m assuming you don’t. AI is a tool that you can use but should not be your ultimate and final drafts. Use it as that and that’s it. Be different. Pour all your industry knowledge out there for the world to see, hear, and read.

Separate Your Digital Marketing From Your Competitors

You want to zig when everyone is zagging and zag when everyone is zigging. Research your competitors and other companies and see what they are doing. If everyone is running Facebook Ads, it’ll be tough to break through and gain market share. You can view their ads and creatives and see what they are running. Inspire your content with that and make it better.

Maybe a smarter choice would be to go to a platform that no one is advertising on, say Pinterest for example, and run ads there. You do, however, want to be mindful of your target audience, where they hang out, and what their intentions are on that platform. It may end up being a failure, but at least you were able to learn that Pinterest doesn’t return a positive return on your investment.

If no one in your industry is blogging, maybe that’s a great area to capitalize on. Answer any and all of the questions that your customers would be asking Google and start creating content around that. This is what we do with our clients. The majority of our clients and their industry competitors are old school and they haven’t adopted a blogging strategy, meanwhile, there are thousands of people researching their service monthly. This is a simple area to capture. A few other examples could be podcasting, YouTube, TikTok, and maybe it’s just sponsoring a local sports team. We’re seeing a big surge in supporting local recently. Discover the different areas where you can create content around digital marketing and where you will be able to separate yourself from your competitors.

Don’t Copy The Big Players

You may think that you should just copy whatever the big companies are doing, but that may not be the best strategy. Why? First “big” is subjective. If you are comparing to massive companies say the Target’s and Amazon’s of the world, there are lots of politics and agendas involved. If “big” for you is just your city or town’s big dog, then it’s a little bit different. However, how do you expect to stand out from them if they already have the brand name and value, they have trust built with consumers and now you’re copying them? You need to stand out and be different from them. They may also be targeting differently as they are in a different lifecycle stage of their business.

Stick to your company’s values and beliefs. What we are currently seeing (time to get a little political) but these massive corporations have been shoving down an agenda down our throats. The communities and people are starting to get sick and tired of it. They want to go about their days without being told or shown this stuff.

If you were to have copied them because they included certain demographics in their campaigns, so you thought you would, even if it’s not what you believe in and doesn’t align with your values, now you have created this reputation that you also believe in this.

A few quick examples that you can see where the public rejected this is in the case of Bud Light and Target. Both companies lost several billions of dollars. Stick to your beliefs.

Put The Extra Time & Effort Into Your Digital Marketing

As with most things in life, it takes time to materialize and reap the benefits. Your content, marketing, and approach will be much better if you are putting in the extra time and effort to make it great. If you think about it, it would make sense to do that because by the time you finish, publish, and share it, traffic doesn’t start rolling in instantly. It takes time to materialize. You don’t want to put out something mediocre, that becomes outdated in a few months or a year when that traffic should start picking up. By the time it gets there, it might not be worth people’s time and thus leading them to not share or spend time on it, leading to hurting your overall digital presence.

Just look at some of the biggest YouTuber’s on the platform. They spend hours, if not days to come up with and plan every little detail of a video. This is how they’re able to amass such a massive following, keep their videos in perpetual circulation for people to watch, and create such high quality content. It’s going to take time to build and create whatever you are working on. Be willing to put in the extra effort.

Think Long-Term

We’re playing the long game here. If you put in all the up front effort to create and make something great, that will help market it for you. Put the systems and processes in place. Have the best customer experience possible. If you start bombarding everyone with these great marketing strategies, but you don’t have great retention on your product or service, your marketing efforts will end up falling short. Even worse, once you stop marketing, you won’t receive any more customers because it’s dependent new customers are dependent upon your marketing efforts.

If you put that extra time and effort into your business, creating the best offer possible, your customers will end up marketing for you. Think of the lifetime value of a customer. If they only buy your product or service once because it wasn’t amazing or blew them away, that’s the end of their journey. They won’t tell anyone about you, even worse, they may tell someone to notuse you. This also means that whatever it costs to get that customer, is what it will cost for the next. This is where the dependent factor comes into play.

If you create this outstanding product or service, they end up coming back and buying more. They may even bring a friend or two. This will continue to snowball down if you’re able to provide this amazing experience. Think long-term and work on the lifetime value of your customers.
