Meta Is Taking Away Your Placement Exclusions

Set the account-level control now, under Advertising Settings, Account Controls, Placement Controls. It applies everywhere, and it's already a stronger block than the ad set checkbox you've been using.

If you run Meta ads, you've probably been unchecking Audience Network on every campaign for years. Meta's notice in Ads Manager says that's ending: "Excluding placements, platforms, devices and operating systems will no longer be available for your ad sets." No date attached, and it's rolling out account by account, so you may not see the notice yet.

What Meta is Taking Away

The exclusion checkboxes at the ad set level. Today you can tell Meta no: no Audience Network, no right column, no Messenger, no Android. That list disappears, and you hand over the assets and let Meta's system decide where they run.

In exchange you get bid adjustments per placement, a percentage up or down on the ones you'd rather not lean on. That's how Google Ads has worked for years. Less control in one place, more in another.

Your Meta Ad Set Checkbox Was Leaking Anyway

Before you mourn the old setup, look at what it was doing. Exclude a placement at the ad set level and there's a checkbox under it. Here's ours: "we'll aim to spend around 5% of your budget for each excluded placement when it's likely to improve performance." Meta switches it on for you.

Read that again: for each excluded placement. Exclude four, and you've authorized up to 20% of that budget to run where you thought you'd blocked it. Most advertisers have never unchecked that box, so the exclusions everyone's about to lose were never the hard block they felt like.

Set the Account-Level Control Instead

One control sits above all of that, with no 5% clause. Credit to one of our Cliniverse members for spotting it, which is usually how these changes surface before Meta gets around to explaining them.

Go to Advertising Settings, then Account Controls, then Placement Controls. Switch on "my business can only advertise on specific placements", then uncheck what you don't want. Audience Network is the usual one. Consider the right column too. Review, apply, and give it up to 48 hours.

That covers every campaign in the account, and it's a block rather than a suggestion with a 5% escape hatch. How it behaves once the ad set change lands everywhere is anyone's guess, but it costs nothing to set, and today it's the better control.

What This Means for a Clinic's Meta Ads

Less than the panic suggests. If you're running lead campaigns for a clinic, your conversions were landing in Facebook feed, Instagram feed, stories and reels regardless. Those are the placements that convert for lead campaigns, which is exactly why they cost more. Meta's system optimizes toward conversions, so that's where it was already sending your budget.

The bigger shift is where this is heading. Meta keeps moving control from the ad set to its AI, which puts more weight on what you still decide: your creative, your offer, and where the click lands. You can see the nudge in the ad set already, framing every placement as a performance win.

For what the spend itself should look like, we broke that down in how much Meta ads cost.

Go set the account-level control this week. Then get back to the creative, because that's the lever that's still yours.
